How the typing test works
Type Before Think is a free online typing speed test. Choose a topic, difficulty, and duration, then type the passage shown on screen. The timer starts with your first keystroke. When you reach the end of a passage, the test loads another one so you can keep typing until your selected time runs out.
Choosing a test
Durations range from 15 seconds to 15 minutes. A short test is useful for a quick check; a longer test gives you more time to settle into a steady rhythm. You can choose easy, medium, or hard passages and switch topics between tests. The test also offers themes and advanced settings for hiding the timer or live statistics and preventing text correction.
Understanding your results
WPM means words per minute. For scoring, one word equals five typed characters. Your result highlights correct WPM, which counts correctly typed characters over the time you used. Accuracy is the percentage of your retained typed characters that are correct. If you correct a mistake before the test ends, the corrected character counts as correct in the final result.
The results screen also shows your recent correct WPM scores. Up to ten results and their test dates are saved in this browser's local storage, so you can review your progress on the same device and browser. Clearing browser data removes that history.
A practical way to improve
Start at a comfortable pace and pay attention to accuracy. Repeat tests of the same duration when comparing your scores, since very short and long tests can feel different. When you can type a passage accurately, try a harder difficulty or a longer duration. Your recent scores can help you see whether the change improves your correct WPM over time.
